dc.description.notes | This research compares experiences of women from different ethnic backgrounds living in the United States when disclosing the occurrence of intimate partner abuse. In all, sixty-two South Asian, African American, and Hispanic women attending domestic violence programmes were interviewed. The variables analysed were: level of acculturation, type and severity of abuse, where they turned for help, responses received and how supported they felt. Study results show that the majority of all women approached a member of their kin network for assistance and women from all three ethnic groups solicited support from members of the abuser’s family. The findings suggest that women experiencing more severe levels of abuse may be the least likely to disclose to others. Authors suggest that services should include interventions for family members of the victim and perpetrator as one way to assist culturally diverse battered women. | en |
