Presents the methodology and findings of a US study aimed at investigating the role of offender substance use and abuse in determining whether or not victims will seek police assistance during or following a domestic violence incident. The paucity of research into the factors that contribute to women’s decision to call police is highlighted and studies demonstrating the link between alcohol abuse and domestic violence are reviewed. The findings indicate perpetrator substance abuse, together with a range of other factors such as frequency of abuse, play a significant role in victims’ decision to seek police intervention.en
