dc.description.notes | Reports and discusses the methodology and findings of a research project in Canada aimed at establishing a ‘grounded theory’ in relation to the processes of recovery and rebuilding amongst abused women within a conservative evangelical subculture. Utilising a naturalistic methodology, the study explores some of the ways in which women rebuild their personal and spiritual identity, redefine their relationship with their religious community and find new ways of expressing themselves within that community, after escaping violent relationships. It is argued that spirituality and church participation were key elements in the participants’ lives and as such, played a major role both in how they experienced the violence and in their recovery and rebuilding process. Attention is drawn to the need for churches to take a more active role in preventing and/or responding to family violence and the collaboration of social agencies and churches in raising awareness and facilitating social change for victims is advocated. | en |
