This study focuses on long-term health effects of childhood victimisation based on data from the US National Violence Against Women Survey. From November 1995 to May 1996, eight thousand women were interviewed via a computer-assisted telephone method. Women’s experiences of child sexual and physical abuse were assessed. To measure its association with adults’ health problems, the presence of characteristic consequences of abuse were selected as measures. The interviewees were asked about perceptions of physical health, physical injury, drug and alcohol use, chronic physical and mental health condition, and miscarriage or stillbirth. The results show that childhood victimisation is significantly associated with the first five measures. The study suggests that early intervention might reduce the presence of health problems.en
