Notes:  This is a response to Holtzworth-Munroe and Meehan’s article on the typologies of men who are maritally violent. It outlines areas of concern with the definitions of terms, methodology used, and areas requiring further exploration such as common couple versus patriarchal violence; subtypes related to outcome; pathways from childhood traumas; and a nested ecological framework. It highlights that the empirical testing of the typology was conducted on small samples of only 15 DB (dysphoric or borderline) and 16 GVA (generally violent and antisocial) men, which could hide significant differences between groups. Concerns were raised with the clustering methods. With regard to the conceptual framework, the typology focuses on characteristics of the individual as it is an intrapersonal model looking at individual differences. This author notes that husband violence occurs in the context of interpersonal relationships, communities, subcultures and society, and suggests that macroframeworks such as the nested ecological model and the theory of triadic influence could add to the understanding of offender typologies.
