Challenging more conventional research paradigms, this article explores the impact of domestic violence not only on the victims’ emotional and physical health, but also on other aspects of their life and on the lives of those connected to them. This is achieved through an analysis of life narrative interviews with women in the US who had previously lived in a battered woman’s shelter. A review of relevant literature and an outline of the methodology and results are provided, and it is argued that the findings indicate a woman’s experience of domestic violence will have both first-, second- and third-order effects – that is, the violence will have an impact on the woman directly, on her relationships with others and on those around her. Each of these levels of impact is then discussed in more detail and examples are provided. The authors suggest that the first-, second- and third-order effects of violence are interrelated and that an ecological framework might enable service providers to better understand the ‘radiating’ impact of domestic violence and the totality of effects it can have on a victim’s life.en
