dc.description.notes | Recounts the history of research into rape and sexual assault over the past two decades and suggests directions for future research. Initially, the community-based rape crisis centres of the 1970s provided figures on the incidence of sexual assault in the US community. This was followed by academic research into the incidence and prevalence of rape and attempted rape, and then into the mental health effects suffered by survivors as typified by post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Research advanced into studying the effects of the crime on family and friends of the rape survivor, as well as on professionals such as sexual assault therapists and rape crisis centre staff who experience vicarious trauma, and even on rape researchers. Proposes that research should now move from prevalence to identifying effective prevention programmes and to enhancing community-based interventions for rape survivors. Suggests that the complexity of the problem calls for the development of methodological frameworks to move research forward. | en |
