This article gives an overview of the psychological effects of the major forms of violence against women such as intimate partner violence, sexual assault, and stalking. It discusses the variables that determine the effects of such victimisation, including type and characteristics of the assault, victim variables such as demographics, psychological reactions at the time of trauma, past victimisation history, current and past psychological difficulties, or comorbid mental difficulties, and general coping style, as well as sociocultural variables like poverty, social inequality and social support. It briefly outlines rape trauma syndrome, battered woman syndrome, complex post-traumatic stress disorder and the validity of post-assault syndromes for considering complex impact models of interpersonal violence effects. It concludes by looking at psychological assessment and the need for multitarget, multimodal treatment approaches, including safety planning and social network issues.en
