This article contrasts criminal justice and public health approaches to defining violence against women (VAW). It outlines the main controversies regarding the measurement of VAW such as the types of VAW that should be measured; the time frames that VAW should be measured; the sources from which VAW information should be collected; and what to do with multiple types of VAW and multiple victimisation. Key principles in identifying and measuring VAW cases are summarised. Changes to improve the measurement of VAW are suggested. Recommendations from the United States Centres for Disease Control and Prevention Workshop on Building Data Systems for Monitoring and Responding to Violence Against Women, and the World Health Organisation (WHO) World Report on Violence and Health, are also reviewed. It concludes that changes are necessary in the FBI Uniform Crime Reports and National Crime Victimisation Survey to improve measurement of rape and sexual assault.en
