This study aimed to identify and analyse the responses to intimate partner violence by Spanish women. 400 women aged between 18 and 65 were randomly selected from three primary practices of a health care centre in Granada. 68.4% showed an active response, with 58.2% attempting to resolve the situation through separation; 15.2% reporting the abuse to authorities, 15.2% seeking help from health professionals and 6.3% seeking help from battered women’s associations. As age increased the likelihood of doing something about the abuse lessened also single women, separated, divorced and widowed women were more likely to take action on intimate partner abuse than were married women. Intensity of abuse was a strong factor in determining a woman’s likelihood of leaving a relationship. This study reflects that the majority of women do take steps to leave an abusive relationship which contradicts some commonly held viewsen
