Outlines the methodology and results of an American study aimed at testing earlier findings that alcohol use by husbands has the capacity to mitigate the negative effects of physical aggression on marital functioning and satisfaction. A review of the research linking domestic violence and alcohol use/abuse is also conducted. Although the results of the study failed to replicate patterns identified by previous research, some of the differences in sample demographics and size are highlighted and it is suggested that these earlier findings reflected the nature of a small number of unique relationships, rather than the dynamics of abusive relationships generally.en
