This article describes the US study that looked at risk factors for violence among a sample of women with physical disabilities. It found that 100 (56%) of the 177 women in the study indicated a history of abuse. Of the women who reported abuse, most had experienced multiple abuse with the abusers being their male partners. It also found that only a small proportion sought and received help. Women stated that they did not seek help because: they felt they could handle it themselves; of the availability of other sources of support; they were unaware of where to go; they felt embarrassed; they felt guilty about being a burden; they were fearful that the abuser could come after them; they had a fear of not being believed; and to a lesser extent, there was a concern that the shelter would lack appropriate accommodations. Suggested interventions strategies include: advocacy activities for women with disabilities; activities with schools; activities to prevent violence from partner and caregiver; and community awareness activitiesen
