Discusses working with, and providing culturally appropriate dispute resolution and counselling services to, Aboriginal people in the Family Court setting. Emphasis is placed on the diversity of Aboriginal communities and the need to be aware of the varying degrees of bi-cultural competence indigenous Australians possess. Argues that the historical, socio-cultural and communication differences between Aboriginal and Anglo-Australians necessitates different approaches to interviewing, assessment and intervention. It is concluded that if the Family Court is to foster a real commitment to working with Aboriginal people, respect for their culture, laws, traditions and beliefs must be paramount and that in order to achieve this, more time and resources must be devoted to Aboriginal-specific service delivery.en
