Notes:	This article addresses the difficulties faced by women who suffer mental illnesses when escaping an abusive relationship. Mentally ill or chemically dependent women are a highly represented group in Beryl Women’s Refuge in Canberra. It is believed that many of them endure violence because insufficient options are available. Residential treatment facilities do not accommodate their children. Similarly, even though domestic and family violence refuges cater for the family, mental health issues are generally untreated. A possible increase in the number of children with personality disturbances who access the services is also reported.
