Focusing on prosecution practices, this article reviews current debate regarding criminal justice responses to domestic and family violence and discusses some of the key needs identified by women who participated in recent studies. The arguments for and against a pro-prosecution stance are canvassed and the ACT Family Violence Intervention Program (FVIP) is described as an example of how such a policy can be effective if implemented in a coordinated and integrated manner. Issues raised by ‘no drop’ prosecution policies are discussed and it is suggested that victim safety and satisfaction can very often be achieved through consistency and communication, regardless of whether pro-prosecution policies are in place.en
