Notes: | Reports the findings of a qualitative research study aimed at assessing the needs of women, men and young people who have experienced and/or witnessed domestic violence in South Australia, attempting to identify areas in which early intervention would be beneficial. Initially an overview of the literature relating to links between domestic violence and child abuse is provided and some of the factors influencing children’s responses are discussed. Specific barriers to intervention with young people are identified and the major concerns emerging from interviews with parents are explored, including behavioural problems, modelling of violent behaviour and the impact of belonging to a cultural minority. The perceptions of domestic violence reported by young people are then reviewed and it is suggested that the findings challenge assumptions about the intergenerational transmission of violence. Major needs to which services should be responding are outlined and the need for multiple strategies at a number of levels is advocated. |
