This article briefly discusses the results of a US study of 40,636 children entering the Illinois domestic violence service system over a 5-year period, to consider the effects of exposure to domestic violence on children. The intake assessment of the children’s problems included completion of a symptom checklist. Analysis of the data indicates that children experienced a range of problems in the emotional (e.g. mood swings), social (resisting discipline), educational (learning and behavioural problems), and physical health areas. An important area not addressed in the research was the differences in outcomes for children who experienced domestic violence directly or indirectly. It concludes that domestic violence programmes need to be coordinated with mental health agencies and other providers, with an increased focus on children’s needs.en
