dc.description.notes | Examines the kinds of pre-conditions that enable women to ask for help, who they turn to for support and how these services work. Seventeen women with an average age of 34 years were interviewed for 2 hours after assessment of the level of violence they experienced using the Conflict Tactics Scale. 88% reported physical abuse; the article also gives a breakdown of other types of violence experienced by those women. Most (70%) reported strong family relationships to whom they turned for support; less than a third reported support from friends and co-workers and the church; 70% sought formal support e.g. counselling and just over half contacted the police and the law, and they reported a range of unsatisfactory and satisfactory responses. The study found that there are many barriers to social support for victims of domestic violence; some of the reasons include failure of family and friends to understand the issues and a previous experience of an inadequate response from the police. | en |
