This review article surveys empirical data which links substance abuse and domestic violence and goes on to examine briefly the theories and research which explains the link between the two: classical disinhibition, cognitive distortion, learned disinhibition, deviancy disavowal and power. The practical issues of dealing with substance abusers in the context of treating a perpetrator are also discussed. These include what constitutes best practice in this situation, an examination of the critical assumptions to be made in the practice setting, screening and assessment, placement and exclusion and sequencing of the intervention. The special case of treating African American men is addressed and five points are suggested to achieve a change in their behaviour.en
