| dc.description.notes | Authors argue that, although many perpetrator programmes state that the safety and well being of women and their children is a core principle, there is little research which explores how well this is achieved. They undertook this study to address this research gap through in-depth interviews with 25 partners of men who had participated in a Canadian Batterers’ Program, based on the work of Alan Jenkins. Most of the women reported some positive changes in their lives through their partners’ participation in the programme. Their narratives reflected three themes: feelings of enhanced safety (though this was a complex issue with less than one-third of the women reporting feeling completely safe, and factors outside of the programme cited as some of the reasons for increased safety); a sense of enhanced well-being; and the experience of being validated by programme staff who were often the first to say that the women bore no responsibility for their partners’ abusive behaviour.
