dc.description.notes | Based on a phenomenological study of battered women from a multiethnic population in Hawaii, this article provides a background to the incidence, prevalence and nature of spousal abuse in Hawaii, before discussing the concept of ‘culture’ and the role of patriarchy in perpetuating violence against women from a range of cultural backgrounds. A literature review of cross-cultural studies of domestic violence is presented and the descriptions of lived experiences of violence provided by respondents are analysed in terms of three major theme clusters – painting the whole picture, describing the violence and living with the consequences. These key themes are then broken down into sub-themes, such as looking for reasons, or looking for help, in order to ‘fill out’ the picture of respondents’ experiences. Argues the themes emerging from women’s stories were relatively indistinguishable across cultural groups and that more similarities than differences were apparent, suggesting the dominance of patriarchy in both Western and Eastern cultures is one possible reason for this consistency. | en |
