Notes:	This US study utilised the Transtheoretical Model (TM), which usually examines male batterers and their abusive behaviour, to analyse women’s process of ending abuse. The narratives of seventy-eight women were categorised in five stages: a) not recognising their relationship as abusive (precontemplation); b) acknowledging the problem (contemplation); c) considering their options (preparation); d) deciding to end the abuse (action); and e) keeping themselves safe (maintenance). The authors concluded that the stages of change of the TM were consistent with the experiences described.
