dc.description.notes | This article describes training for police officers on domestic violence and racism, based on a review of the literature and collective teaching experiences. It gives an overview of a one-day police training in the US, which focused on discrimination faced by battered women of colour and battered immigrant women. It identifies challenges in training police officers about the barriers experienced by battered women of colour and immigrant women, such as problems systemic to society (sexism and racism), problems systemic to police agencies, and the history of tension between police and battered women’s advocates. A multilevel approach to implement strategies to address the challenges, within a three-tiered training, is suggested. The three-tiered approach includes: pre-training strategies (building and strengthening relationships); training (mitigating a hostile climate, addressing stereotypes, exploring commonalities, and addressing power imbalances); and follow-up. | en |
