dc.description.notes | Examines the multiple forms of disadvantage faced by Indigenous women in Australian society within the historical and cultural context of Aboriginal communities. Highlights the ways in which race issues have dominated political agendas and allowed intra-racial power imbalances and issues specific to women and children in Indigenous communities to be overlooked. Reviews anthropological literature relating to the traditional status of women in Indigenous communities and the existence of Indigenous violence prior to colonisation arguing perceptions of Aboriginal people as inherently ‘savage’ are radically misconceived and that the historic violence of the state has played a major role in the development of contemporary Aboriginal societies in which violence is considered the norm. Concludes by examining some of the difficulties associated with creating a voice for Aboriginal women whose experiences lie at the interface of race and gender. | en |
