Provides a background to the introduction of legislative and policy changes directed at combating domestic violence in New Zealand throughout the 1980s and ’90s, highlighting key developments providing the impetus for the Domestic Violence Act 1995. Criticisms of previous domestic violence legislation are examined and ways in which the new Act addresses these issues are outlined, along with some of the unique features of the current legislation, such as its broad definitions of ‘family’ and ‘domestic violence’. The role of the family court in implementing the legislation and incorporating provisions of other relevant Acts is considered and challenges for future policy, research and practice are identified.en
