Presents data from four studies aimed at describing and evaluating the psychometric properties of the Comprehensive Child Maltreatment Scale (CCMS). An overview of some of the difficulties which can arise when attempting to measure child maltreatment is provided, as is a background to the development of the scale. It is suggested that, as a first attempt to assess of all five kinds of child maltreatment – physical abuse, sexual abuse, psychological maltreatment, neglect and witnessing family violence – the CCMS's internal validity and reliability are relatively good, even if its external validity may be problematic. Argues that although much research remains to be done, the CCMS provides a useful tool for measuring family environment and a wide range of maltreatment experiences.en
