The judge refused to take into account the statement of a forensic psychiatrist to the effect that years of abuse had caused a dissociative personality to develop that led to her criminal behaviour. Outlines the lack of response of various services outside the gaol in reply to her pleas for counselling and support for her children who were living with the abusive former partner. Highlights the urgent need for programmes in correctional centres for women with moderate to long sentences who have been living in abusive relationships, comparing their behaviours to those of people with addiction to alcohol and other drugs. The author points out that many programmes are provided for drug and alcohol abusers in correctional centres and it is a perfect opportunity to address these behaviours at a point when women are open to change. | en |
