This article looks at the international research relating to animal abuse in situations of family violence. Explanations for animal abuse are proposed, such as intimidation and the terrorising of others. In the case of abused children who are feeling powerless and victimised, they may abuse their pets because their pets represent something that can be controlled. The theory of childhood animal cruelty and the subsequent behaviour of cruelty towards humans in adulthood is explored. An overview of the US and Canadian research into concurrent animal abuse and human directed violence is presented and although the research has been limited, a definitive relationship has been detected. This has implications for screening and prevention, in particular for the understanding the factors identifying those child victims of abuse who may become perpetrators in adulthood, and interrupting such behaviours.en
