Thirty-six single mothers from various geographical regions in South Australia were interviewed in relation to various aspects of their experiences, including social stigma, parenting arrangements and their ability to access paid work, income/child support and education/training resources. The findings suggest those women who had experienced violence in their past relationship were more at risk of social isolation and difficulty in establishing post-separation parenting and property arrangements. Linked to this was a greater incidence of poverty and lower incidence of education and qualifications. Advocates the development of social policies which address the various ways in which domestic violence can compound the disadvantages faced by sole parents and highlights the need to examine negative outcomes in children within their broader context, rather than the simplistic ‘break down of family values’ framework. | en |
