In 1997, the International Women’s Development Agency convened a workshop ‘Assessing Strategies and Services to Reduce Gender Violence’ for women from Papua New Guinea, Cambodia, El Salvador, South Africa, Vanuatu and the Philippines. A group of women came together to talk about strategies that had been used to address violence against women. The women participating in the workshop suggested that the term ‘violence against women’ was preferable to ‘gender violence’ because it provided the clearest articulation of the issues and was more easily translatable in languages other than English. The workshop proceedings endorsed the universality of women’s experiences of violence and the common barriers faced by those who work against violence against women. It also highlighted the diverse and creative range of responses being implemented around the region. The strength and courage of the women who work, often with little or no pay in these areas was also acknowledged. This paper offers a broad overview of some of the action being undertaken in these parts of the world.en
