Notes: | Provides a feminist analysis of mental health to examine social constructions, policy, service delivery and practice in relation to mental health issues for women. The reconceptualisation of mental health from a woman-centred feminist viewpoint reveals discrepancies and links the social, political and economic issues, including violence, to the mental well being of women. Current policies are gender blind, and service delivery does not respond adequately to women’s needs. For example, a woman’s experience of trauma or violence is often denied or trivialised by the medical system. Discusses the development of feminist therapy, and alternative practices to better meet the needs of women living with a mental illness. |
