The New South Wales Aboriginal Justice Advisory Council (AJAC) has responsibility for ensuring ongoing commitment to the New South Wales Government's Aboriginal Justice Plan, which has the overall aim of reducing Indigenous overrepresentation in the criminal justice system as both victims and offenders. As part of its response to the Aboriginal Justice Plan, AJAC has developed four initiatives to address family violence and child protection issues in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. These projects have adopted early intervention and prevention approaches to build an awareness of family violence issues as they relate to Indigenous Australian families. They aim to educate and empower Indigenous children in their right to equality, protection and safety. They are also designed to strengthen Indigenous families and communities to take responsibility for the welfare of their children with the consultation and support of relevant government and non government bodies. This article outlines the principles of the Aboriginal Justice Plan and describes the four AJAC projects.<br/ >Author's Address:<br/ >Psychologist, NSW Aboriginal Justice Advisory Council, and Learning and Development Branch, Department of Community Services, Locked Bag 4028, Ashfield NSW 2131<br/ >Indigenous Law Bulletin v.7 no.4 Mar-Apr 2008: 14-18en
