This article is part of a series of related articles in a special edition of the Aggression and Violent Behavior journal, ‘Current Controversies on the Role of Gender in Partner Violence’.<br/ >This article critically examines the research for program alternatives to cognitive-behavioural approaches to perpetrator interventions. Specifically, the following alternative treatments are discussed: psychodynamic treatment for attachment disorder, matching treatment type to batter type, motivational techniques addressing the stages of change, culturally-orientated approaches (focussed on Latino and African-American) and couples counselling. The author concludes that evidence for these approaches is weak and there is strong generic evidence for the current cognitive-behavioural approach.en
