The author, who participates in the Boys RAVE project, addresses the inter-generational transmission of violence or cycle of abuse. He points out that research shows that the majority of boys and young men that have witnessed domestic violence are not violent in their future relationships. Preventive programmes directed to sons of abusive fathers stigmatise and label this group as potentially violent. Inter-generational transmission theory distracts attention from the socio-economic changes required to reduce violence, and the consequences of subordinating the role of women. The concept of intergenerational transmission of violence justifies the acts of the perpetrators; causal explanations of violence ignore the complexity of violence and the array of experiences faced.en
