Special Issue Title: "Intimate betrayal: Domestic violence in lesbian relationships"<br/ >Experiences of discrimination, homophobia, heterosexism and trauma are common among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people. This article explores intra-lesbian battering from the perspective of cultural oppression, internalised homophobia and shame. Sexual control and isolation are derived from the feelings of shame for non-heterosexual sexual orientation. The defensive reactions to shame as detected by D.L. Nathenson, including withdrawal, avoidance, attack the self and attack the other, are explored. Spiritual shame promoted by the religious evil of homophobia prevents successful healing processes. A treatment for victims and perpetrators of domestic violence with the principles of the theology of liberation and the psychology of healing from trauma is suggested.en
