dc.description.notes | Overview: This bulletin from the New South Wales (NSW) Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research reports on trends in sentencing and bail decisions for some major criminal offence categories between 1993 and 2007 in NSW local and high courts.<br/ ><br/ >Discussion: The analysis of court data demonstrates: a significant upward trend in bail refusal over all offence categories; an increase in the use of imprisonment in all categories examined, with the exception of fraud; and an increase in imprisonment in nine out of the eleven categories evaluated in this bulletin. The paper notes a corresponding increase in the NSW prison population of 50.3% over the same time period. The statistical analysis refutes public and media perceptions that NSW courts are increasingly lenient in sentencing and administration of bail. | en |
