A recent study conducted by the Psychiatry Research and Teaching Unit at the University of New South Wales found that the prevalence of mental disorders among Australian women was strongly correlated with gender-based violence. Rees and her co-authors analysed data from the National Mental Health and Wellbeing Survey and published their findings as “Lifetime prevalence of gender-based violence and the relationship with mental disorders and psychosocial function”.<br/ ><br/ >In this article, Rees argues that the right for women to live without violence, recognised as a human right and a public health priority, should incorporate the right to protection from mental disorder. She presents data from the published study on the association of gender-related violence and the mental health of women, and other data on the mortality associated with gender-related violence. She comments on the difficulties faced by women in seeking support from social services and she promotes the need for longitudinal research designed to reveal the links between violence and mental disorders.en
