Human violence toward animals has been related to child maltreatment and domestic violence. This study focuses on the confluence of companion animal abuse in domestic violence situations. A national survey of the largest shelters for battered women was conducted in the United States to evaluate the reporting and screening of animal maltreatment. In more than 85 per cent of the shelters, women talked about animal abuse, and in 27 per cent of the shelters, their intake interviews had questions about companion animals. The implications for domestic violence programmes, animal welfare organisations and children’s services regarding animal maltreatment are discussed.en
