Notes: | Describes the first case in Australia to rely successfully on the ‘battered wife (spouse) syndrome’ in a same-sex relationship, yet notes that, despite the publicity attracted by this case, silence surrounds same-sex domestic violence. Part One of the paper defines the problem of violence in same sex relationships and examines its manifestations, the myths and stereotypes and prevalence. The second part discusses the major issues which need to be addressed when considering how to respond to same-sex violence including reluctance of the lesbian and gay community to acknowledge the problem; the role of heterosexism and homophobia in maintaining their silence; the role and attitude of police and the courts; and the accessibility of services. The paper concludes with an overview of resources available to assist battered lesbians and gay men in Perth. |
