This paper reports on the 1998 South Australian phone-in interview of 120 callers who experience domestic violence. Female callers were the largest group reporting significant levels of individual and overlapping incidents of physical, sexual, verbal, emotional and economic abuse. The violence endured by the nine male victims living in heterosexual relationships (7.5%) was mainly physical, verbal and emotional. Both groups remained in the relationship for the same reasons and shared similar feelings of shame due to the disclosure. Contrasting with women's statements, males did not report of living in fear, of previous experiences of violent relationships and of post-separation violence. Additional similarities and differences between male and female victims are discussed.en
