Bonomi et al’s article is contextualised within a social climate of increasing sexualised representations of women and the “normalization and romanticising of violence” (p.733) against women in popular culture. The article discusses the authors’ study of the depiction of the relationship between protagonists Christian Grey and Anastastia Steele in best-selling novel Fifty Shades of Grey:. More specifically, it explores elements of emotional abuse, such as stalking, intimidation and social isolation; physical abuse, such as slapping and choking; and sexual violence, such as intercourse without consent, detailed in the text. The authors draw the conclusion that Fifty Shades of Grey:does indeed place Anastasia in frequent situations that represent incidents of intimate partner violence, perpetrated by Christian. Anastasia’s responses to these interactions support this interpretation.en
