Notes: | Discusses the findings of a series of semi-structured interviews conducted with residents of a mid-west USA battered women’s shelter in the early 1990s. Participants were asked what they believed they needed to enhance their own and their children’s quality of life and the data obtained were analysed with a view to identifying the ways in which women’s perspectives reflect individualised or structural discourses. A ‘continuum of resistance’ was developed to map women’s responses in terms of whether their focus was primarily on survival, equality or transformation. The range of perspectives discovered in the course of the interviews suggested varying levels of consciousness and a diversity of needs not adequately addressed by dominant feminist social change theories and practices. The importance of listening to women’s stories and adopting more participatory responses to domestic violence is highlighted. |
