Notes:	Describes the internal processes experienced by women when deciding that violence by their partners is unacceptable, and choosing to remain in the relationship to try to end the violence. Literature has previously ignored what is termed as the ‘turning point’, focusing instead on the powerlessness of women to leave abusive relationships. A sample of 20 Israeli women participated in a qualitative research study, examining the meanings women gave to their own experiences and events leading up to the ‘turning point’. Findings define the term, and the losses experienced by women. Implications of research include the need for professionals to develop new understandings of the ways in which women cope with abuse, and to recognise their strengths which may not be exclusively demonstrated by the woman’s decision to leave, but also when the woman decides to remain in the relationship and promote change.
