This article presents the findings from a US-based study of 2169 university students examining the relationship between experiencing childhood maltreatment and perpetrating intimate partner violence in adulthood. The researchers found that childhood maltreatment, including sexual and emotional abuse and exposure to domestic violence, was significantly related to intimate partner violence perpetration and victimisation. However, emotional abuse was the strongest predictor of perpetration or victimisation. The authors also examined emotion regulation, gender and ethnicity as mediating factors.en
