Reports on a 12-month follow-up of a group of women who had previously been assessed for the presence of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and levels of anxiety, and depression when residing in a refuge. They found a significant reduction in the incidence of PTSD though many still exhibited a range of post-trauma symptoms. Levels of anxiety and depression also decreased significantly over this period. Prerequisites for recovery were listed as a sense of safety and the presence of social support. They conclude that a better knowledge of outcome, combined with an understanding of the factors that promote or impede recovery, should assist in formulating policy.en
