This article outlines the links between domestic violence , disability and older women in Australia. It looks at issues for older women who have experienced or are experiencing domestic and family violence, and the correlation between violence and disability, especially anxiety and depression. The concepts of life-span violence and the lifetime impacts of violence are considered. Statistics on the extent of violence against older women are summarised.<br/ ><br/ >The term ‘elder abuse’ and its usefulness in responding and understanding violence against older women are questioned. It suggests the need to avoid the assumption in the term ‘elder abuse’ that violence only happens when the person is older. Instead, it argues that the experiences of women who have survived a lifetime of violence need to be recognised.<br/ ><br/ >Examples of anxiety and depression and their diagnosis are also outlined. Barriers to disclosure, along with the invisibility of older women and in relation to domestic violence (including sexual assault), mean that this area of research needs to listen to the voices of older women, in order to contribute to the understanding of the extent to which disability is the result of violence.en
