dc.description.notes | Outlines the methodology and results of a multicentre prospective cohort study examining the antenatal associations of domestic violence in Australian teenage pregnancy and the impact of abuse on pregnancy outcomes. Highlights the prevalence of domestic abuse in the study population and the scarcity of research investigating the consequences of this abuse. The study also compares the cost of teenage pregnancy complicated by domestic abuse with the average Australian pregnancy and the average Australian teenage pregnancy. Concludes that pregnant teenagers exposed to domestic violence are at a higher risk of a variety of negative outcomes including drug/alcohol abuse, homelessness, psychological problems and poor physical health. Such outcomes also create greater costs for the community. Suggests earlier identification and intervention with teenagers involved in violent relationships as the way forward. | en |
