dc.description.notes | It is accepted that worldwide many psychiatric service users are experiencing or have experienced intimate partner violence (IPV) but this facet of their lives remains unaddressed by mental health professionals. In order to understand this disjunction more fully, a survey of 131 UK mental health professionals was conducted to assess their knowledge, attitudes and capability to respond to patients living with domestic violence issues.<br/ ><br/ >The authors found that only 15% of survey respondents asked patients about IPV; only 27% provided information once IPV was disclosed; and 60% felt their knowledge of available support services was inadequate. Nyame et al. conclude that these results demonstrate the need for domestic violence training programs to be implemented which will increase service providers’ knowledge and capacity to address clients’ needs. | en |
