Notes:	Despite much effort, Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) remains a persistent global issue. This paper examines abused women's experiences with the criminal justice system by reviewing the literature mainly from Australia and the US, as well as drawing from an ongoing Australian study. It argues that current arrest policies, conceptions and beliefs held by professionals, and the hidden nature of IPV, increase the risk of double victimisation when women invoke their right to safety and protection through the criminal justice system. Attention is paid to the importance of acknowledging the victim-offender relationship. The paper highlights avenues for further research into joint police-social service responses.
