Discusses ideas developed from an action research project being conducted in Adelaide. The study focuses on abused women’s experiences of being alienated from their children as a result of the deliberate mother-blaming tactics of the perpetrator. Guided by feminist principles, the study highlights the ways in which social and professional systems can exacerbate the devastating impact of maternal alienation, reinforcing gendered constructions of male and female parental responsibilities. Advocates for the concept of maternal alienation to be incorporated into professional theory and practice so that the focus might be shifted from the ‘failures’ of the mother to the violence and tactics of the perpetrator. Refers to court decisions in the US involving parental alienation syndrome.en
